Meet at the Hops Garden (23392 E Glidden Drive) to harvest some hops.
When will the hops be ready to harvest? The hops will be ready during the first two weeks of September. The cones should feel a bit like dry paper. When broken open they should have a yellow powder.
If you miss this time slot, just come anytime afterward to harvest on your own.
How many hops to take home? A sandwich bag stuffed pretty full will make one batch.
We expect to harvest about 1 gallon of hops for the home brewers, but the plants will likely have produced more than we need.
The
Fall Fest will take place on October 4th starting at noon.
The hops are “Nugget” which is a general all-around hop good for beer making.
Nugget was bred by the USDA and saw its first commercial harvest in 1983. Since then, it has become a mainstay in many big American style beers including IPAs, stouts, and barley wines. It is primarily used as a bittering hop due to its high alpha acids, but many highly respected breweries use it for aroma and flavor as well. Nugget’s high myrcene oil content gives it a woody and piney character.
